The Boston Red Sox landed Alex Bregman in free agency and the vibes couldn’t have been higher in Boston. But there’s a slight problem in terms of positions.

Bregman is one of the best defensive third basemen in the league while Rafael Devers is a below-average defender. So the obvious move is slotting Bregman in at third base and moving Devers to designated hitter.

But Devers denounced the idea of being the DH. He reportedly doesn’t want to move off third base, which could become a huge problem for Boston.

There’s a chance Devers ends up demanding a trade out of Boston if the two sides can’t work things out.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted the Red Sox would trade Devers to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a league-altering trade.

Here’s the full deal pitched by Rymer:

  • Los Angeles Dodgers receive: 3B Rafael Devers
  • Boston Red Sox receive: 3B/1B Max Muncy, INF/OF Chris Taylor, RHP Bobby Miller, SS Alex Freeland (Dodgers No. 4 prospect)

From a trade value standpoint, this could actually make sense.

The Red Sox would be landing a huge return in exchange for their superstar, but Boston isn’t likely to move Devers unless he demands a trade. As of now, he hasn’t done so, but if he does, this trade could make a lot of sense.

Muncy and Taylor could step in as day-one impact players in Boston while Bobby Miller could compete for innings. If Miller can get healthy, he has ace potential.

Still, it doesn’t make much sense for the Red Sox to trade him right now. Unless something drastically changes, we should assume Devers will remain in Boston.
